Over the years, they've created an authentic basketball experience, carefully adding clever and unique features to keep it fresh each year.NBA 2K17 launched last week with Indiana Pacers star Paul George on the cover. Here are six things I learned from our return to the court.1.

Little has changed inside the arena. But that's not a bad thing. Fundamentally, NBA 2K17 sticks to what works, which is creating a realistic, fluid game of basketball. Players move like you would expect in a real world game of hoops. Controls feel very similar to last year, so the transition should be smooth for veteran players. There are minor tweaks, such as a simpler way to quickly substitute players.

Originally, players had to tap a shoulder button to cycle through players until they hit the one they wanted in the game. Now it's a wheel-based system where you use the right thumbstick to make a lineup change.2. There are still some small issues. Defenders controlled through artificial intelligence are smart, quick and tenacious. But only the ones playing for the opposing team. If it's teammates not in your control, they struggle moving past screens, offer little help defense and will leave shooters wide open on the break.

Also, the game's directional passing controls aren't as precise as needed.3. You get to team up with Michael Jordan. OK, fine, it's not the Chicago Bulls legend. Instead, it's actor Michael B. Jordan, who makes a cameo in the video game's MyCareer mode.

This options lets users create a player and begin the journey to the pros. The beginning of the experience features a strong narrative element, influenced by last year's game in which director director Spike Lee started the storytelling trend for the franchise. You follow a player nicknamed 'Pres' - short for 'President' - as he picks his college, plays several key games then makes the leap to the NBA.4. We're talking about practice! This is where Michael B. Jordan enters, playing teammate Justice Young, reminding you the only way to get better is through practice.

It's a key component in MyCareer, as players are encouraged to practice often to improve their game. A meter that reads 'Doin' Work' represents how much effort players put in practice. The more you practice, the quicker you can upgrade. Practices often involve shooting the ball and participating in drills. The only real annoyance is moving between practice and other activities, since it takes a while to load up the gym for a session.5. The Seattle Sonics are back. Only if you want them, though.

The MyGM mode lets players run an NBA team either as a coach or general manager, controlling everything from roster changes to setting prices for concessions. The new wrinkle is the option to expand the league by as many as six teams. Players can either create their own teams, jerseys, logos and courts, or upload them among a variety of community-created options. And, yes, the Sonics are well-represented here already. Once added, the game runs through an expansion draft to fill out the roster and reorganizes schedules to fit the new teams.6. Basketball nerds will still love running a team.

Although MyGM is largely the same, too, there are subtle yet great changes to how to run your team. Trades are more robust, allowing players to not only offer draft picks, but also choose what level of protection you want to place on them (lottery protected, top 5 protected, etc.). Users can also adjust game plans depending on the team. About to play a smaller, run-and-gun team? Update your roster adjustments for that team by giving smaller, quicker players more minutes.
